Sending our deep gratitude to Kat

Dear friends,

Sisters of the Road is more than just an organization. It is a 45-year-old community united by our deep belief that all of us have inherent value and dignity — regardless of financial status. This is why it’s important for us to openly share big changes within the organization.

First, Kat Mahoney has stepped down as executive director, as of last week. Kat became executive director in 2022 at a time when Sisters was in crisis. Not only did she stabilize the organization, she dared all of us to dream boldly about our future.

Kat challenged us to aim higher to create a dining space that is safe, clean and dignified. Her activist spirit nurtured a systemic change program that is changing how Portlanders are talking and thinking about homelessness and the inherent dignity of all people. As a board, we are grateful for Kat’s service and wish her the best.

Second, we are pivoting from our original plan of reopening our cafe space in the historic House of Louie. We have worked hard to raise funds to create a cafe that our community deserves and wants but we have not been able to meet our ambitious goals.

We understand how important the cafe is as a place for belonging, acceptance and nourishment for people of all income levels. We look forward to keeping you updated as we regroup and figure out next steps.

The remaining leaders of Sisters have a lot to resolve — operationally, systemically and philosophically. We know that staff, volunteers and the communities we serve need us to be a strong, healthy organization. While we don’t have all the answers yet, we know we will need your support. Please stay engaged and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions.

In community,

Matt Chorpenning,
Board Vice President
