Welcome to Sisters, Maddie!

What drew you to work at Sisters of the Road?

I was drawn to work at Sisters because of the organization’s unique philosophy and long- standing work alongside the community here in Portland. I respect Sisters’ commitment to addressing the root causes of homelessness and poverty while also historically providing a space in which people can build community and dine with dignity!

Which of Sisters’ philosophies do you relate to the most and why?

I really believe in Sisters’ commitment to systemic change. A major component of alleviating poverty and homelessness is implementing systemic solutions through public policy, advocacy, and listening to people who have experienced homelessness and poverty first and foremost.

What do you think people misunderstand or get wrong about homelessness or poverty?

Sometimes, people don’t address that a major cause of homelessness and poverty is a lack of affordable, accessible housing. There are also a number of barriers that can prevent someone from securing housing, including the ever-increasing cost of rent, low pay that does not provide a living wage, and a need for rental history that not everyone can provide.

What do you do for fun outside of work?

I really enjoy playing guitar and bass in my free time. I also like going to the movies and seeing live music when I can. I volunteer weekly at Blanchet House and look forward to seeing volunteers, staff, and community members each week at the cafe!

What’s one book or film that you recommend?

American Movie, Dir. Chris Smith
