Volunteer Program Mission

Our volunteer program exists to ensure that volunteer resources are available throughout our organization to support Cafe operations, events, outreach projects and committees.  All volunteers must demonstrate a commitment to Sisters’ philosophies of nonviolence and gentle personalism, a community organizing and a systemic change model.

Who are Sisters Of The Road Volunteers?

Our volunteers are people who reflect the diversity of our community.  Volunteers come from many different backgrounds, and bring their unique experiences to build authentic relationships that transcend class barriers. They are open to learning and practicing nonviolence, anti-oppressions, gentle personalism, and hospitality.

We’re not set up for one-time volunteer service, groups of volunteers, or for folks who need to fulfill school or court-ordered community service requirements. We ask that all volunteers be at least 16 years old, or at least 12 years old with a parent or supervising adult. What Do Sisters Of The Road Volunteers Do?

Every year, more than 200+ volunteers give their time, energy, and hearts to Sisters’ community.  These volunteers worked an amazing 4,400 hours last year, more than two full time equivalent employees!

Many of our volunteers start out by working in the Cafe for 2-3 hour shifts during our open hours: 10am to 2:30pm, Monday-Friday.  Cafe volunteers work alongside staff and customers to do early morning kitchen prep, prepare meals, bus tables, serve-up food and drinks, and give plenty of hospitality. Volunteers also provide invaluable assistance on special events and committees, and office support. Click here to learn more about specific volunteer opportunities.
