May 2013: In gratitude to mothers and families

MJ the poet

This month we celebrate mothers and families. We chatted with MJ, a longtime customer and dear friend.

My name is MJ, I’m a mom of an almost 12 year old lil’ girl. She’s my pride and joy. I’m so family- oriented. My family’s my life, my momma especially. She has taught me all I know. So truth is, without my momma, I wouldn’t be me.

MJ has also been a “street mom”, and this is what she had to say;

Being a street mom is a good thing. I help young people who are new on the streets, showing them where to go for food, clothes, shelter and necessities. I love being a street mom, it gives me a good feeling of helping and giving hope. And it lets people know they’re not alone, that they have someone they can count on out on the streets.

As a truly special treat, here is a poem MJ shared with us:

Being a mother is a special thing.
It takes your heart & soul to a whole new place.
A new life to love, care for, and teach.
A mother’s love is never ending.
Not condescending, only everlasting.
Hugs, kisses & mistakes.
Breakups, best friends and heartaches.
Always there through it all
and always on-call.
If you love your mom let her know.
Truth is, we trust and love her through all our life.
She stands by our side
as a guardian & a guide.
She’s our special light.
Always in our hearts and on our minds.
Being a mom is a special thing.
We teach our children to grow and sing.
So being a mom is a BLESSING and
not just a job.
