June 2012: Sisters receives Outstanding Community Service Award at Statewide Conference

Accepting the OPA award

The Oregon Psychological Association (OPA) honored Sisters with the 2012 Outstanding Community Service Award at their annual conference in May. Marcia Wood, long-time Sisters supporter and friend and past OPA Board President, submitted the nomination for Sisters.

“OPA is delighted to honor Sisters Of The Road for your impressive contributions to the emotional and psychological health of all those you serve. Your systemic efforts to build community, empower people, learn from one another, dine with dignity, and organize for justice and human rights for all, aims at solutions that reach to the very roots of homelessness and poverty. The belief that you can make a real difference in people’s lives leads to action that does just that,”

Wood wrote describing why she made the nomination.

Psychologist Fabiana Wallis, Co-Director of Conexiones and the Center for Trauma Recovery and Chair of the OPA Diversity Committee had this to say about Sisters. “As a psychologist who works with people affected by trauma, I am well aware of the remarkable value of having a safe place to share a meal or have a conversation embedded in respect. Sisters Of The Road provides exactly that experience for many people recovering from trauma and that is why we consider them partners in healing.”

The Outstanding Community Service Award was established to acknowledge the contributions of a person or group in Oregon, who although outside the formal field of psychology has by its actions, theory or research promoted or contributed to the emotional and psychological well-being of others through the positive use of psychological principles.

Monica Beemer and Johanna Rayman accepted the award on behalf of Sisters’ community at a reception and lunch at the OPA annual conference at the Oregon Convention Center. Sisters would like to thank the Oregon Psychological Association for this recognition and honor and for their good work promoting wellness and health for all of our community.
